| Thai massage is a western name for a system of techniques that was born in Thailand. This system known as Nuad Phaen Boran focuses on aligning the bodies energies my manipulation of pressure points that intern act on specific areas of the body such as digestion, circulation or disease resistance. Think of the bodies internal systems as having external muscular receiving points that when stimulated correctly make a change in that body system.
Although Thai massage is certainly an external muscles manipulation therapy the goal and focus is on affecting internal body systems in a favorable way. A masseuse may use their elbows, knees and feet in a tradition Thai massage in attempt to unclog the energy pathways that run through the body. These energy pathways or "Sen" number in the thousands and a good therapist will reference them all although working on only a handful.
If Sen blockages are left untreated they can result in cronic ailments, diseases and ultimately death. An experienced Thai masseuse will find and eliminate these blockages through out a series of treatments. Each treatment consists of the client lying on a thick mat or thin foam pad on the floor. The masseuse then uses their body weight to achieve various pressures through their knees,feet and elbows. Thai massage uses extreme amounts of physical pressure to achieve its desired effect and many people are unable to tolerate it. An inabiltity to relax and bare a good deal of pain can result in the client tensing up which in many cases excaserbates any condition the client may have previously had.
