Active Release

Active Release Technique or ART is a patented massage technique invented from the practice of P. Michael Leahy, DC,CCSP . Dr Leahy found that the traditional treatments he had learned were not affectively treating the soft tissue in his clients. Mainly in areas where the muscles had acute injuries (pulls, tears, ect.), accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma), lack of oxygen (hypoxia) and postural strains. By using direct pressure along with client specific movements he could change the texture and range of motion of the muscles to increase comfort, flexibility and strength. By developing over 500 unique moves to release chronic muscle holding patterns, he found he could relieve 90% of his clients chronic pain.

Specifically ART addresses the nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and scar tissue in the body. It releases the body from fibrosis and adhesions. Breaking up the scar tissue and bringing more circulation and proper nerve supply to the soft tissues of the body. Freeing the muscle fibers to respond normally to everyday stresses.

ART can affectively treat all of the following:

Sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, migraines, TMJ, headaches, numbness, spinal issues, reoccurring injuries like strains and sprains, tendonitis, arthritis, and peripheral nerve entrapments. The specific techniques developed by Dr. Leahy can release many if not all of chronic pain dealing with soft tissue quickly and most often permanently.

Dr. Leahy divided the teaching of ART in three courses: lower extremities, upper extremities and spine. To become an ART provider you must take the 3 courses and pass all of the exams. After certification a provider is expected to attend ART annual seminars to keep the certification credentials. To find an ART provider or to receive information about certification you can call 888.396.2727 to reach the main ART office or visit the ART website: www.activerelease.com
