Vermont Not Regulated
31 January 2011The AMTA tried to set things in motion for the state of Vermont, but they didn’t bite. I checked to see how many Massage Envy’s are in Vermont -only one. They tend to help the AMTA’s efforts in obtaining regulations in states that do not have them. That is one of the reasons I like Massage Envy. Not to worry the state of Vermont will come around, sooner then later.
Hospital Massage
19 January 2011This is great, I hope they get to use their tables or it is just asking for future broken therapists. Kaiser also offers Massage in house at their clinic/ hospitals but they are prescribed 1/2 hour and it is extremely hard to get in. Scheduling is at least 3 months out.
I guess it depends on how many therapists and if they take care of them by having the proper tools and compensation. However, the word is out. Massage is a good modality of health-care to have available to keep people healthy. There is no stopping it now, people are getting educated, and insurance companies are finding the benefits. More good news for the Massage Community.

12 January 2011Now is the time to make things happen. If you have good ideas for improvement, get it done. “If you wait until all the lights are ‘green’ before you leave home, you’ll never get started on your trip to the top.”

Sports ROM Table: Look Out!
5 January 2011I read this article from MassageMag.com and followed the link to the website. ROM-T Enterprises has the right idea, I would love one of these tables, especially if I were to go to sports events and offer my services. I was always wanting something like this when stretching my clients. If I didn’t love my stationary table I have in my office I would be tempted to buy this one to replace it.
The one thing I noticed was the statement that it is easy to release and replace the wings. It didn’t look so easy and the client still had to move or felt she had to move. Sports people wouldn’t mind moving but that is one of the things they point out as the reason they made the table.
Check into it. It’s worth it, enjoy.

The Trager Approach
14 December 2010I was in a Rolfing session today and was told to check out The Trager Approch. We had discussed massages with a movement approach and the massages I give have passive movement that I use that enables me to see where the restrictions are in a joint.
At first when I started reading about Trager, I thought that it was nothing close to what I did. Now I am convinced it would be a great CE to do that would help me further my knowledge and my approach to Massage for my clients.
The Tragerus.org had great resources and articles like this PDF Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. Its a bit of a read but really interesting and even if you don’t want to do Trager CE’s, I would do it anyway.
Rolfing, Where Can It Take Your Practice
6 December 2010Tomorrow marks the 8th Rolfing session I will receive. My decision to start came from the necessity of specialized help for my wrist. I felt the only profitable options opened unto me were PT and Rolfing. I chose Rolfing because I liked the idea that it would help the whole body and not just my left arm. At PT I have been given homework and enjoy the information provided in addition to why it will help me.
In school we heard mentioned the word fascia, but never talked about the sections of fascia and the relation it has on muscle groups. These new experiences I have had with the working of my fascia has prompted more research on my part. During my research this article popped up on NPR, it in turn has lead me to the Fascia Congress, Gil Hedley, and Robert Schleip, PH.D, which have some awesome articles and insights to the knowledge of Fascia. Check it out for yourself and see if the information provided doesn’t enhance your understanding of the body to activate your brain during your next massage session.
Oh, and yes I have 85% ROM back on my wrist and I will soon have 100%. Yeah!!
Its All About Time, Angles and Pressure
17 November 2010How long do you spend on each technique? Do you take the time to slowly access the underlining tissues to make a bigger impact on the effect of the massage?
Most clients that are sports or exercise orientated will allow not just a full body massage, but the sports focus treatment as well. This takes using more time to slowly and deliberately access the deeper layers.
When I was in school the LMP’s that came to the clinic would always give me the feedback to slow down, and sink in to the tissues. Now that I have graduated I am always giving the exact same advice to student massages and some graduated students as well. When you take the time and use this knowledge your massages will be more meaningful to you and the client. Always accept feedback from client when trying new techniques, then adapt and utilize this information in your ever changing routine.
Treatments after Injury
8 November 2010When I got the cast off my arm, the Orthopedic asked me if I would be doing PT for it. I had checked my pathology books before and had found movements and exercises for homework, so I said, “No I think I can work with it.” Now I see why he really didn’t think I could efficiently work with it on my own. I have had to add electro-stim, acupuncture, and now Rolfing and Structural Integration to the mix and I think I have found the right combination for an effective recovery.
I had never done Rolfing before. I had read about it and heard that it was not a modality that put you to sleep, and instead of focusing on my wrist like PT’s would have done, it works with my whole posture. I have had three sessions and have noticed improvements in the ROM of my wrist and full body movements and stretches. I am now a fan! However, I am told the next session will be working on adductors…. Yeah!!! I was wondering when that was going to happen.
