Outline of The Massage Profession

23 November 2009

Recognition and status as a liable profession is more then necessary for Massage Therapy. I really like this MassageMag.com article, it lays the facts out nicely. From the beginning of western medicine massage was slowly pushed aside from nursing and the physical therapy curriculum’s, but you can’t get rid of necessity. We have always been around and we are here to stay.

I love it, their is no end to learning in this profession. Lets keep climbing this ladder.

Massage Therapy Is Here To Stay

18 November 2009

Despite all the negative, uninformed media, the Massage community is building a strong foundation for positive recognition. Yes, we are human and yes there are mistakes made, feelings hurt and well meaning people. However, anyone claiming to be a Licensed Massage Therapist, is also owning up to a little thing called code of conduct.

Massage curriculum does contain what is appropriate and what is not, in great detail. Although some may take their own liberties and ignore what is appropriate, it does not mean all therapists are the same. When these proper educates are disregarded, they are no longer considered a Licensed Massage Therapist. That is why it is very important for every state to have regulations and laws upheld by a state board.

Many states that have not been regulated are taking the necessary steps for becoming so. It does take time, but it is happening.

Playing Hard to Stay In The Game

11 November 2009

The NCBTMB has been making a great deal of changes lately. They have announced a new association, added a Spanish translation of the NCETM/TMB, invented an Advanced Certification, fought legally with Florida, Oregon and other states to stay on as an official exam, and now, an election that sounds fabulous.

My only wish is that the Massage Industry can improve its standing by better regulations done by all the states and proper media recognition. It seems to me the fragments from the 2007 MBLEx government supported furry has subsided. The Federation’s goal was to make the communication of the state Massage Boards comply across the nation to make for a better community. I can see the results are positive.

My past complaint of the NCBTMB was their customer service…. Oh I do hope this new election will remedy that. Here is to hoping for the best.

Injured and Cant Work

4 November 2009

For most of us Massage Therapists, our income is the only income. What are we to do if we become injured bad enough that work is not possible? In resent months a few of my fellow therapists have had to take “breaks” from their practices. One injured her shoulder and the other broke her left hand. These are essential tools in our line of work. I have sprained my right pinky and left index finger and right now I am nursing my left QL, but these don’t stop me from working.

I try and practice what I preach, ice in acute, heat/ice sub-acute and Ice/heat chronic. With my sprains I also put flax seed oil topically whale icing and found the recover time significantly less. Because we need to maintain an active lifestyle, their is no way we can stay clear of the little things that may slow us down. However, do we have a little rainy day savings or food storage enough to last us through a 5 week rest and recover stint?

If we buy one more can of food something we normally eat and stash it away, take a lunch instead of going out, or put that five dollars a week in a forgetful place. We just might be prepared. Even in these trying times, we can and must be frugal. Even if we haven’t had a slow time, it is wise to do this. Being prepared might not even help us, a friend in need may come along. Lets work to insure that we have a stockpile, so we can fend for ourselves when needed.
